Deep Ocean (Abyssal Creatures)
Aboleth
Apex species of the deepest oceans. Highly intelligent with psychic/spell-like abilities. Live in trenches, guard dungeons.
Kraken
Enormous cephalopod predators. Encountered mostly as young who hunt in shallower water than adults. Attack ships and sometimes coast-dwellers. Tentacles are bioluminescent.
Chuul
Underwater cave-dwellers. Found near continental shelves and hydrothermal vents. Glowing sensory organs.
Giant Octopod
Natural predator of the deep. Use giant octopus. Some squirt bioluminescent ink.
Sea Hag
Encountered in regular and deep sea variety. See sea hag. Preys on unwary travelers. Deep sea appearence: frond-like hair, algae growths on skin.
Coastal (Intertidal Creatures)
Locathah
Live in shallows around island chains, coastal cities. Mostly neutral or friendly with land-dwellers. See locathah. Skilled fishers and traders.
Merrow
Amphibious, live near and sometimes raid shorelines. Sometimes hostile, sometimes neutral. See merrow. Appearence: dark skin with coral nodules.
Shambling Mound
Animate seaweed or algae that grows along reefs or water farms. Territorial hazard. See shambling mound.
Sea Lion or Giant Otter
Guard fishing grounds
Reef Shark
Lurk in shallow waters near reefs, islands.
Merfolk
A more reclusive and mysterious community compared to the merrow and locathah.
Giant Serpent
Ocean predators. Consider adapting some dragons to this role.
Island (Shoreline Denizens)
Giant Crab
Encountered alone or in swarms. Sometimes predate coastal livestock, eggs.
Large Sea Bird (Large Roc Variant)
Flying predator and biggest avian on Thalassa. Gull or albatross analog. See roc.
Sea Sprite (Water Weird)
Rare guardian spirits of small coves, springs. See sprite. May help or hinder travelers.
Crocodile
Shallows-dwelling ambush predator.
Giant Lizard
Island predators. Consider adapting some dragons to this role.
Roles
Aboleths guard high-level dungeons.
Locathah inhabit coastal societies.
Kraken juveniles or giant octopii are seasonal, migratory repeating threats.
Sharks, merrow, and sea hags may harry travelers between islands.
